| Deputy James Anderson was laid to rest on Tuesday, September 29, 2009. Deputy Anderson was killed in the line of duty on Thursday September 24, 2009 at approximately 1:00pm CST. Deputy Anderson and his partner had stopped a suspicious vehicle that they had observed pulling in and out several driveways, after running the tag they discovered that the vehicle had a switched tag and inititated a traffic stop. As Deputy Anderson exited the patrol unit, the suspect accelerated towards him and struck him pinning Deputy Anderson under the vehicle. Attempts to revive him at the scene were unsuccessful and he was transported to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead. He is survived by his wife and two children. The Lee County Sheriff's Office has setup a fund at Regions Bank to help the family during this tragic time. Anyone wishing to make a donation can do so at any Regions Bank location. We would also like to thank all the members of the local law enforcement agencies, the Opelika Police Department, the Auburn Police Department and the Alabama State Troopers for their assistance during this tragic time. Deputy Anderson will be sorely missed by the Sheriff's Office as we have lost one of our family. Our prayers will remain with the family for now and forever.
Sheriff Jay Jones would also like to thank the citizens of Lee County for their outpouring of support during this troubled time and to the members of the law enforcement community that turned out for the funeral.
