AU Student Murdered - Solved!

On Tuesday March 4th the Auburn Police Department received a call reporting an injured female along Alabama Hwy. 147.  When police units arrived on the scene they found 18-year-old Lauren Burk suffering from a single gunshot wound.  She was transported to East Alabama Medical Center where she passed away.  Some 30 minutes later the Auburn Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire on the Auburn University campus.  Fire crews were able to quickly put the fire out and then it was discovered that the vehicle belonged to Lauren Burk.  At this time there are no suspects and the public is asked for all available assistance. The Auburn Police Department has asked for assistance from surrounding agencies and in response Sheriff Jones has assigned his entire Investigative Division to this case in hopes of bringing it to a fast conclusion.  Anyone with any information can contact  Lee County Crime Stoppers @ 1-888-5227-847 or the Auburn Police Department @ 334-501-7337.

On March 8, 2008 the task force released a statement that they had arrested 23 year old Cortney Lockhart for the murder of Lauren Burk.  Lockhart is currently being held in the Russell County Jail on unrelated charges and is expected to be transferred to Lee County sometime this week.  The arrest of Lockhart will hopefully bring some closer to the family of Lauren Burk.  Sheriff Jay Jones and the entire Lee County Sheriff's Office offer our prayers to the Burk family.
