Sheriff Jay Jones announces that the Lee County Sheriff's Office in conjunction with the Lee County School System will be providing the "Too Good for Drugs" program to all 5th grade students this coming year. This program will replace the DARE program in the Lee County School System. After extensive research it was determined that the "Too Good for Drugs" program provided a more up to date lesson plan to those involved. The program has already been adopted by some 2500 school systems across the country and has had tremendous success. The program originally started in Florida and was created by Florida businessman Charles Mendez, following his death the Mendez Foundation was formed and continues his work today. In 1984 the "Too Good for Drugs" program went nationwide and has continued to grow. One of the main benefits of this program is that it is considered to be researched based and therefore is able to grow and change as needed. Deputies have already been trained in the new program and will begin teaching at the beginning of the new school year. The Lee County School System will follow-up with additional classes being taught in the high schools to help re-enforce the ideas taught to the students in the 5th grade.
