Sheriff Jay Jones Sheriff Jones began his law-enforcement career with the Lee County Sheriff's Office in 1976 while a student at Auburn University. He started working in the jail as a corrections officer/communications operator and quickly moved into a road position as a full time deputy. Sheriff Jones experienced all aspects of the Sheriff's Office by moving up in the ranks over the years and finally into the Investigative Division where he became the division commander. He stayed in this position until he was first elected Sheriff in 1998. Sheriff Jones obtained his BS degree from Auburn University in 1976 and later obtained his MS degree from Troy State in 1980. Sheriff Jones has attended many excellent classes through out his career including the FBI National Academy, Leadership Lee County, FBI Southern Law Enforcement Executive Development Seminar, the National Sheriff's Institue, United States Secret Service Dignitary Protection Seminar and the FBI National Law Enforcement Executive Development Seminar. He currently serves on the Advisory Board to the United States Attorney's Office and the Alabama Attorney General's Office. He is a governor's appointee to the Advisory Committe on Women in Criminal Justice and the Alabama Crime Victim's Compensation Commission. Here in Lee County he has been asked to serve on several board of directors to include: the Alabama Sheriff's Youth Ranches, the Lee County Youth Development Center, Leadership Lee County, the Child Advocacy Center of East Alabama, the Boys and Girls Club of Lee County, the Domestic Violence Intervention Center, the Lee County Humane Society, the Lee County Emergency Communications District Board and the Lee County Auburn Club. He is currently a member of the Auburn Rotary Club, the Bleecker Ruritan Club, the Smiths Station Ruritan Club, the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 21, the East Alabama Peace Officers Association, the Alabama Peace Officers Association, the F.B.I. National Academy Associates, the National Sheriff's Association, the Police Futurists International, the Law Enforcement Executive Development Association, the American Corrections Association and the Alabama Jail Association. Sheriff Jones is also an instructor of Criminal Justice courses at Auburn University and Southern Union Community College.
